Go off-the-grid with the Rayburn

Good Food, Hot Baths, Warm Home

South Africa is facing an electricity crisis, which according to Eskom’s leadership will continue into the foreseeable future. We are facing two major electrical challenges: supply and cost. Electricity has been increasing in cost at an average of 16% per annum.

Selected AGA and Rayburn appliances help to drastically reduce your home’s reliance on electricity for cooking, domestic hot water and home central heating.

Average S.A. home electricity consumption

SA homeowners have to address the supply challenges by installing backup supply sources. Back up electrical supply sources (such as solar, batteries and generators) are expensive and only address part of the energy challenge.

On average, back up electricity sources provide power for lights and selected appliances – approximately 50% of the electrical needs in summer months – but this number drops in Winter to around 30%.

In winter the average SA home is consuming:

So typically moving off the grid requires a mix of other fuel sources including gas, oil (paraffin) and solid fuel (wood and coal).

AGA Central Heating Solutions

Right now, in South Africa, not only is the Rayburn a sound investment that includes moving your home’s energy needs off the grid – it also offers cast-iron cooking, domestic hot water and central heating all wrapped in one sleek, stylish cooker, elevating your culinary status with succulent food, in the heart of your exclusive home.

The Rayburn Cooker has been an industry leader in central heating for over 75 years – the 400 series is fired by illuminating paraffin; the 200 and 300 series by solid fuel (wood and/or coal).  These classically designed cookers efficiently deliver the energy your home needs, and by being controllable and flexible ensures lower fuel bills and “off grid” capability.

Heating the home is especially an issue and using electricity for this is no longer an option for most households. Most of South Africa’s homes were built with underfloor heating when SA’s electricity was cheap. Using underfloor heating is now prohibitively expensive and highly inefficient.

Our recommendation is to use hot water circulated through radiators to warm the home, and through a hot water geyser to provide high pressure domestic hot water. Our AGA home central heating solutions can heat your home at around 25% of the cost of traditional underfloor electric heating. This efficiency is achieved through the fuel source (illuminating paraffin and solid fuel fired appliances run at approximately 35-45% cost of electricity and gas per kWh) and using radiators to distribute the heat in your home.
